Wise-Anderson Protocol — The Trigger Point Wand Proven to Help Pelvic Pain

SUMMARY

Over the last several decades, researchers discovered that myofascial trigger points—tight, painful knots in the pelvic muscles—are a major cause of chronic pelvic pain in both men and women. Many people diagnosed with prostatitis or pelvic floor disorders are not suffering from infections but from chronic tension and spasm in the pelvic floor muscles.

To address this, the Wise-Anderson Protocol was developed as a comprehensive program focusing on releasing painful internal and external trigger points and calming the chronically activated nervous system that contributes to pelvic pain. A major advancement came in 2012 when the FDA approved the first Internal Trigger Point Wand, invented by David Wise, PhD. This device allows properly trained patients to safely reach and release internal pelvic trigger points at home.

Studies from the Wise-Anderson team show that large numbers of men diagnosed with prostatitis actually have pelvic muscle dysfunction. These symptoms—urinary issues, pain, and sexual dysfunction—are often mistakenly treated with antibiotics or anti-inflammatories, even when no infection is present.

The protocol includes a 6-day immersive training program teaching patients how to find and release pelvic trigger points and how to reduce nervous-system-driven muscle tension. In a clinical trial involving 393 patients between 2008 and 2011, participants showed significant symptom reduction after six months of self-treatment.

Conventional medications, surgeries, and procedures rarely help because they do not address the root cause: chronic pelvic muscle tightening and heightened anxiety. By combining physical trigger point release with methods that calm the nervous system, the Wise-Anderson Protocol offers long-term relief and a fundamentally different approach to treating chronic pelvic pain.
